From emotional illiteracy to emotional wisdom.

Emotions are the unseen currents that guide much of our daily lives. Yet, for years, I navigated these waters without a map or compass. Like many, I grew to believe that emotions were distractions at best, weaknesses at worst. Expressing them, or even acknowledging them, was not encouraged. This emotional illiteracy left me ill-equipped to understand myself or connect with others. But over time, I discovered the power of emotional intelligence (EQ) and its transformative effects on life and relationships.

What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence, often referred to as EQ, is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage your own emotions while also being able to recognize, understand, and influence the emotions of others. Psychologist Daniel Goleman popularized the concept, breaking it down into five key components:

  1. Self-awareness – Recognizing your own emotions and their effects.

  2. Self-regulation – Managing emotions constructively and staying in control.

  3. Motivation – Using emotions to fuel purpose and achieve goals.

  4. Empathy – Understanding and sharing the feelings of others.

  5. Social skills – Building strong interpersonal connections.

At its core, EQ is about mastering the language of emotions and learning how to communicate with yourself and others effectively. Read more about Daniel Goleman's work here.
